THE ASO PROFESSIONAL FIELD GUIDE / Google Play listing experiments

A WINNING BADGE
IS NOT THE WHOLE STORY.

Store listing experiments can compare alternatives. The useful result is a better decision about your listing, supported by a clear question and properly interpreted evidence.

Google Play listing experiments

A Google Play listing experiment compares eligible variants within a specific listing and language setup. Record the exact selected metric and population, review the platform’s uncertainty output, and keep the application of a variant separate from the result interpretation.

Your deliverable: Match a Google Play experiment to the right listing, audience, assets and selected event.

Workflow comparison based on Google’s documentation. Check current options in your account; this is not an experiment result.

01

Match the experiment type to the question.

Google’s experiment documentation distinguishes default graphics experiments from localized experiments. The localized setup includes supported text and graphics options. Choose the configuration around the actual question, language and eligible audience.

Do not assume a title change, description change and screenshot change all belong in the same interface. Confirm the available options in your Play Console before creating the production brief.

02

Write a hypothesis that can be challenged.

For PlanPocket, the question is whether benefit-led Spanish copy explains the supported planning workflow better than the existing feature list. Keep the icon unchanged if the intended learning concerns the description.

Use the hypothesis builder, then complete the localized experiment record below with your actual setup and selected metric.

03

Prepare a comparison you can interpret.

Record the control and variants, the assets being changed and the context of the test. A treatment combining several changes can answer a bundled question, but it cannot cleanly identify the contribution of each part. Choose that tradeoff deliberately.

For copy, review the short description and full description. For visual arguments, use screenshot strategy.

04

Read the metric definition before the chart.

Select the measure that answers the question and document exactly what it counts. A click measure, an install event and a retained user are not interchangeable labels. Use the definitions and planning information shown in the current platform workflow.

The diagram is a planning map, not a replica of Play Console analytics. It contains no invented conversion results or assumed sample-size threshold.

05

Allow for uncertainty and competing changes.

Traffic, baseline behaviour and the effect being investigated influence how much evidence the test can provide. Record campaign shifts, product releases and other changes that may matter. Resist stopping a test solely because the latest number supports the preferred variant.

A result can justify rollout, reject the idea or remain inconclusive. State which conclusion the evidence supports rather than converting every experiment into a success claim.

06

Make rollout a documented decision.

Preserve the tested assets, selected configuration and interpretation. If a variant is applied, record the date and continue reviewing relevant evidence with its limitations. The next test should follow a new question, not simply repeat the same cosmetic change.

WORKED EXAMPLE / FICTIONAL APP

A localized experiment needs a localized question

PlanPocket is a fictional planning app with English and Spanish listings. The team wants to compare a benefit-led Spanish description with its existing translated feature list. It also has a new icon ready. Combining both changes would test a package, while the original question concerns the wording.

How to reason through it

Choose the experiment type and language context from the current console, then check which assets and population it actually includes. Keep the description question separate from the icon project if the goal is to learn about copy. Record the selected event exactly as shown; an install click should not be relabelled as a completed installation in a presentation.

The next practical move

Ask a native reviewer to approve both the factual meaning and the naturalness of the Spanish treatment. Save the baseline and variant, use the available experiment planning controls, and document the intended review conditions. Interpret the outcome within the eligible audience. A useful local result does not automatically establish that the same wording direction will work in English.

The trap to avoid

Do not assume that every visitor sees every experiment. Language, listing configuration and experiment type affect the relevant population. Write down the actual setup instead of describing the test as a universal comparison across the entire app audience.

When the situation gets more complicated

Before reusing a result elsewhere, inspect what made the treatment plausible locally. A stronger outcome-led sentence may be transferable as a creative idea; the exact phrasing and measured effect may not be. Archive the native reviewer’s notes alongside the result so the next market adaptation begins with the reasoning rather than a blind translation of the winning text.

Reporting definition check: Google Play’s current listing-performance documentation distinguishes click intent from completed acquisitions. Preserve the actual event name in your worksheet and comparisons.

FROM METHOD TO DELIVERABLE

A localized copy experiment for PlanPocket

This fictional Spanish-copy comparison changes the description argument while leaving the icon project separate. The table is a record to complete against your actual console, not a promise that every listing has identical options.

Match the population to the question

Spanish-language visitors may come from different countries and contexts. A language-based comparison is not automatically a country-specific result. Record the actual listing and eligible audience, and explain which conclusions cannot be separated with the available reporting. If one market is the business priority, confirm whether the setup can answer that narrower question.

Preserve the exact event definition

The current help page uses click-labelled target metrics, while parts of its definitions use completed-action wording. Copy the selected console label and its explanation into the record, compare the relevant reporting documentation and resolve ambiguity before calling a result completed installations. Do not silently substitute a familiar KPI name. Keep the event definition with the exported result.

Distinguish a draw from insufficient evidence

Review the platform’s reported interpretation and planning settings. A draw under a configured decision rule and a request for more data are not interchangeable statements. If the evidence does not support selecting a variant, retain the uncertainty. An operational copy improvement may still be justified for accuracy or clarity, but describe that reason separately from a demonstrated performance advantage.

APPLY THE METHOD

Make the call before reading the answer.

The result slide says “15% more installs,” but the selected event is unique install clicks. What needs correcting?

Reveal the reasoning

Correct the label and interpretation to the actual event. Click intent and completed installation are different stages. The example percentage is hypothetical; a real result must also retain its uncertainty, audience and observation context.

Your working brief

Use your own app for this exercise. Fill in the six fields below and attach the evidence behind each answer. If you cannot complete a field, write the missing question and the person who can resolve it. Do not replace unknowns with optimistic assumptions.

  1. Listing and language under test
  2. Current console experiment type
  3. Control and variant text or assets
  4. Native review and product accuracy
  5. Selected event, population and review conditions
  6. Result limitations and rollout owner

For each field, distinguish an observation from an interpretation. Add the date and source where available, then identify the decision that follows. A colleague should be able to trace your recommendation back to the evidence without needing you to explain the entire project again.

CLEAR UP THE DETAILS

Common questions.

Can descriptions be tested?

Google’s documented localized experiment setup includes descriptions. Check the current options available to your app and language.

Should I use a fixed duration for every experiment?

No. Plan around the question, traffic and platform configuration rather than assuming every test becomes informative on the same day.

Does a better listing metric prove better customers?

Not by itself. Consider relevant downstream quality when reliable data and attribution are available, and state the limitations.
