Hire the thinking. Not the pitch.

Six questions that reveal how an ASO consultant actually works.

1. What would you need to understand first?

A thoughtful consultant asks about your product, priority market, business goals, release plans and existing data. A confident recommendation before understanding the context is still a guess.

2. What exactly will I receive?

Ask for the shape of the deliverable: audit, metadata, creative brief, testing plan or training. Separate recommendations from production and publishing. Both sides should know where the engagement ends.

3. How do you prioritize?

You need to understand why one change comes before another. Ask how the consultant weighs likely impact, strength of evidence, effort and dependencies. A long list of suggestions is not the same as a plan.

4. What would change your mind?

Good advice comes with assumptions. Ask what data or product context could invalidate a recommendation. The ability to revise a view is more useful than certainty performed for a sales call.

5. Who actually does the work?

Clarify who researches, writes, reviews and presents. If you are hiring a particular expert, make sure the agreed engagement includes their involvement.

6. How will we judge progress?

Agree the measurement approach and its limitations. No consultant controls every influence on rankings, conversion or installs. You want a clear evaluation plan, not a promise that ignores competition and product performance.
